Painting Your Home’s Interior Millwork and Moulding
Your millwork and moulding gets the most wear and tear and often times the most neglect. Your mouldings (otherwise known as trim) includes your baseboards, chair rail, crown molding, door casing, window casing, and any other decorative trim. Your millwork refers to wood work such as your fire place mantle, stair cases, hand rails, doors and window sills. These surfaces get a lot of abuse from finger prints, kicks, bumps, and having things placed on them like water glasses on window sills.
Similar to ceilings, trim is traditionally painted white which draws attention to your unique wall color selection while making your millwork and mouldings look fresh and clean. However it is becoming more common to paint your trim work a custom color that creates a unique feel. Right now it is really trendy to paint your mouldings and millwork an off white color to maintain that white look but with a cool or warm undertone to accentuate the full look of your home.
If your millwork has already been painted with an oil based product we need to transition your home to a water based product. Oil based products were previously used for their durability and affordability but they are messy, smelly products that are bad for the environment. These days we have just as durable products that are water based that won’t create toxic fumes and leave a nasty mess. This does however mean we may need to prime or use a product that is made to adhere to oil based products after a little bit of sanding. These paints are called enamels and are made to protect your wood work from the everyday bumps and scrapes that happen to your doors, baseboards and other surfaces over time. We also recommend using a semi gloss finish so that the sheen also protects the surface. Semi gloss finishes are also a little shinier which creates a appealing “picture frame” quality to your house making everything look clean and fresh.
