I am often asked "I want to paint my brick but is it okay to paint my brick house?" the answer is yes. If done correctly. Another option is lime washing. Lime washing is historically a mineral based, natural way to paint your brick. It’s a method that is environmentally friendly and been used since the Roman times. Lime washing is a really fun painting project that gives your home a charming Old World feel while also giving you the sense of complete satisfaction from a brand new paint job.
Steps We Take To Protect Your House
Prepping to paint my brick house: Paint contractors know when prepping to paint the brick on your house first the brick must be thoroughly pressured washed in order to ensure the surface is clean. An excellent clean means an excellent job.
Masking the house: Then we will mask your home's exterior so that no windows, lights, security cameras etc to ensure the unpainted surfaces of your painting project in order to ensure it's an amazing job at the end.
Caulking the house: Then our experienced painters comb the house for any cracks, nail holes or any other gaps to ensure everything is ready for paint.
Masonry primer: It is of utmost importantance to make sure you use a masonry primer specifically designed for your brick or you could damage your brick.
After that you can use an acrylic or elastomeric paint and apply to coats according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Lime Washing Your House
Limewash is a clay like substance that has to be watered down before applied. The paint calcifies onto the brick and takes on the same characteristics of the brick keeping it naturally porous instead of the plastic feel from a latex paint
Lime wash is different than paint in the sense that it is a clay like substance that hardens and calcifies. First The Proud Paintbrush, your local painter, will add 1 part limewash to 2 parts water into a mixing bucket and make sure the limewash is thoroughly watered down for application. We then spray the brick with water and go ahead and start applying the limewash in phases. We recommend going over first with a heavy nap rollers and then coming back with a masonry brush to fill in all gaps and cracks.
We continue applying the lime wash in stages. At the end of each stage going back to distress and add character to your new paint job. Distressing the brick is of course completely optional for your painting project and if we want to go for a full white look that great too
The paint will be fully cured after 2 days. When doing an exterior paint project one thing that is handy to know is that if for any reason you don’t like it the limewash can be removed with a pressure washer. Not really an option in an interior job but for an exterior job the limewash comes right off if it hasn’t had time to cure.
Once the paint has cured it never chips never peels. Once it sets the finished product becomes as hard as the stone that was already there

Should I paint my brick or will the paint harm the brick?
If the incorrect paint and incorrect primer is used yes the paint can harm the brick. However if you use a specically designed masonry primer and either an acrylic latex or even better an elastomeric paint your brick will look beautiful and be damaged.
Should i paint my exterior brick or is it cheaper to limewash?
Because of what is involved in lime washing your house it's about 3 times cheaper to paint instead of limewashing your house.
I want to paint my brick house, should I paint my brick house white?
Personally I would say yes, having said that white looks great but can be hard to clean. You can hide a lot of imperfection by going with a color with a little more tint.
