Do You Make These Color Mistakes?
Understanding Color Undertones
When searching for a painter in houston that paints both interior and exterior homes there is one tool of the trade to understand… undertones!
Your floor has an undertone, your granite has an undertone, even your dog has an undertone. Two colors that may look great next to each other on a swatch at Sherwin Williams may not reveal their undertone until you see them in the specific lighting of your house. If your painting your walls you need to take into consideration the other surfaces and their under tones before you decide your color so that your project is a beautiful job.
Do not look at colors in isolation. A white may just look like a white until you hold it up to another white and all the undertones start to reveal themselves
Every color is created by taking two or more different colors and mixing them together. To the proportion that a color is used is the proportion in which that undertone will appear. This is why when you choose a beige, a taupe, a gray, or even a black or a white you will most likely find a primary color (red, blue or yellow) undertone that will either compliemnt or clash with the other colors in your home.
Do not underestimate your undertones
A mass tone is the dominant color your eyes naturally recognise. A stop sign is red and the sky is blue but it is the undertones that create the distinction between a red stop sign and a red rose, a blue sky and blue jeans.
You may have a beautiful blue color for your cabinets and you think there is no way you can go wrong with a neutral white however if the blue cabinet has a green undertone and the white walls have a pink undertone all you will see is that green and pink clash even though the colors you started with were blue and white.
Cool and warm color temperatures.
Warm color tones have red, yellow, and orange undertones while cool color tones have blue, green and purple. When trying to determine if your undertones are matching you can also look at how much natural light you have. A north facing house will have a blue undertone in the light. Southern facing homes pull gold and creamier undertones. Your light bulbs have undertones as well that will pull green and yellow undertones from your color.
The best way to determine an undertone is to simply compare the color you are interested in to it's "true" color. If you have a nice green color for an accent wall hold it up to a true green from a color wheel and all the differences will start to reveal themselves. Sometimes a color that you once saw as just green will start to reveal its browns, yellows, pinks, blue etc as you hold it up to a true green.
